                   SOVIET CARRIER POWER??!!

A GIUK SCENARIO BY TIM MONTMARQUET, #377

The war has been on about a week now, and it has not gone
well for NATO. It is clear that NATO intelligence was gravely
mistaken concerning Soviet carrier power; it appears the Soviets
have developed a way to launch land based strike groups from their
Kiev class ships. The NATO intelligence community still refuses
to accept this, but the sailors and airmen of the Roosevelt task
force will tell a different story. They suffered a resounding defeat
enroute to Keflavik, and have steamed to St. Mawagan for repairs.
The British Navy does not have much to say at all, considering it
no longer exists!

The Baltic Sea is now Soviet territory, with southern Norway
left as the lone holdout. Before the last US reconnaissance satellite
was destroyed, a missile cruiser group was observed near a new
Soviet base in Denmark. Poland is once again a Soviet possession;
agents there indicate that Gdansk has been heavily fortified and is
dedicated to supporting the conquest of Norway and Britain.

As Europe is in desperate need of supplies, the NATO sub force
in the GIUK region has been withdrawn to guard the convoys. These
brave sub commanders are wise enough not to express their disgust
at the folly of this, but it is clear that the Soviet missile subs
now have their way in the North Atlantic. COMSUBLANT has admitted
its error, but may now offer only minimal support in the region.

The shipfitters in Britain have done a heroic job repairing the
Roosevelt, and she is ready to roll back the Soviets. Her airing
has been supplemented by British Phantoms, as the F-18's were lost
over Keflavik (along with too many brave pilots). It appears that the
Soviets have been kept unaware of this, and may be overconfident. On
the other hand, they may be eager to finish her off!

ORDERS:

Recon flights have sighted an amphibious group off of Norway; its
objective appears to be Scotland. The Roosevelt is to join with a US
group near southern Ireland and proceed to fortify/retake Stornoway
(minimum victory - 2 amphibs on station at Stornoway for 24 hours,
sink 3 amphibs, 2 Kiev). The Soviet Baltic forces must be defeated
in order to ensure the safety of Britain (minimum victory - destroy
one port/airfield). Also, attack any targets of opportunity that
present themselves enroute (minimum victory - 8 subs, total victory -
4 Kiev, 20 ships, 2 airfields, 2 ports/airfields).

NOTES:

This scenario is designed to run from the NATO side only.

You can still win this scenario if you lose Stornoway (likely); if
so, you probably will need to move the carrier group up fairly fast,
increasing the sub threat. I have given a fair amount of leeway with
the time limit, but do not dawdle.

The action in this scenario starts immediately, with a tremendous
flurry of activity by Red forces. The game will move slowly for the first
few hours of game, but you will probably need the delay! You can speed
things up by using a lower resolution graphics mode (but I would not do
this at the very start unless your PC won't support it - true 1:1 time
may be a little too fast, unless you feel up to it - I wasn't!). You will
see what I mean when you give it a try. This will also result in very large
(100K +) save files, so keep this in mind if you are using a ram disk.
I did not encounter any lockups, etc. that seem to be plaguing the larger
scenarios, but I would save often. Try to avoid panic jumping around the
screen, as this seemed to precipitate problems in other scenarios.

The use of land based aircraft on the Kiev units is not realistic, but
I have not met a Red SAG in this game that can stand up to a NATO CVBG;
the Sov's just serve as target practice. This also allows for air patrols
from unlikely locations; this has been difficult to do otherwise. I
would greatly appreciate comment, etc. concerning this scenario and the use
Soviet air power in this manner.

			Happy Hunting,
